Classroom-based Teacher Research in Art Education

Two approaches to teacher-led, classroom-based research will be presented as a means of addressing issues facing school-based art teachers. Graeme Sullivan, Chair of the NAEA Research Commission, and Director of the School of Visual Arts at Penn State University will moderate joined by two art educators involved in teacher research and professional development who will host: Kathy Marzilli Miraglia, Associate Professor of Art Education and Chairperson of the Department of Art Education at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and Sara Wilson McKay, Chair and Associate Professor of Art Education at Virginia Commonwealth University. High school art teacher, Mogan Bozarth, who teaches at Wesport High School, Massachusetts, will introduce her study, The Practicum Experience: Examining Reflections about my Teaching from a Supervising Practitioner's Perspective. Elementary art teacher, Julie Crowder, who teaches for the Richmond Public Schools, Virginia, will present her work, Exploring Grief in the Elementary Classroom.

Upon completion of an NAEA webinar, participants will receive a Certificate of Participation with (1) clock hour of professional development per session, as designated by NAEA. Clock hours provided upon completion of any NAEA professional learning institute are granted for participation in an organized professional learning experience under responsible sponsorship, capable direction and qualified instruction and can be used toward continuing education credit in most states. It is the responsibility of the participant to verify acceptance by professional governing authorities in their area.
